Gratitude & Blessings for St. Patrick’s Day

March 28, 2016

All 3 ASB programs made special St. Patrick’s Day cards and treats for members or former members of our military branches.  We focused on the importance of experiencing and expressing gratitude for those who have served our country in various ways.  From special cards to making energy balls for local Veterans, the girls of ASB were indeed a blessing to many this winter!IMG_4788IMG_4792

Celebrate the end of Winter with Papa Murphy’s Pizzas!

March 28, 2016

Winter for the THRIVE! middle school group wrapped up with a super fun celebration of team competitions including making our own pizzas. Papa Murphy’s provided each of the girls with individual mini pizzas and all of the fixings.  They were marvelous! We thank the owners of the Bend Papa Murphy’s for their generosity in providing the best snack in the world!

Thank You Home Depot!

March 4, 2016

THRIVE! girls found new ways to express their feelings using their new chalk boards (kits provided by Home Depot).  Some girls experienced their first opportunity to build with a hammer and nails.  From chalk board kits, to hammers, paints and even an experienced “builder” (Thank You – Big Buddy Brettney!) the middle school girls of THRIVE! had an awesome day learning to overcome obstacles – including construction challenges!

New Year’s Lessons – Believe, Think, Do!

January 10, 2016

Most everyone contemplates their new year’s resolutions this time of year. Buddies are dreaming bigger than just short term goals. January lessons at all three ASB programs are encouraging Buddies to define their dreams… big dreams…believing that we can each take steps to make dreams and goals happen.  Girls have been asked to identify at least one thing that they want to see happen in their future and then define the steps to accomplish that dream using SMART goal techniques. Watch out world.. here come some amazing young women who are going to change life for the better!

If you want to make a difference in the lives of young women right here in Bend – join us and become a Buddy mentor. Contact Char at afterschoolbuddies@gmail.com to learn how!

Merry Christmas from ASB!

December 16, 2015

ASB girls and leaders have been busy elves this fall preparing gifts to share with others in need in our community.  From crafting chocolate dipped pretzels and goody bags of food for homeless folks and veterans, to sewing fleece baby hats for teen moms, to raising money by making blankets for a Bend High  fundraiser for a beloved teacher battling cancer – the girls of ASB have been sharing love around Bend just as they have been loved by many of you!   We wish all of our supporters and encouragers a very Merry Christmas.  We look forward to meeting more of you as volunteers, financial supporters, prayer warriors or participants in 2016! We need you to help us care for others in the coming year!

Featured Musicals & Camp Schedule

July 27, 2015

Some folks have asked what our featured musicals are for Theatrical Spectacular.  So – here is the line up…Our opening number will be “Be Our Guest” from Beauty & the Beast presented by the entire camp cast.  During the week campers are divided up into 4 “casts” – each group preparing a musical number from one of these 4 productions: Lion King (Hakuna Matata), Sound of Music (My Favorite Things), Rent (Seasons of Love) and D___ Yankees (You Got to Have Heart).   Girls can choose to perform as a cast member singing and dancing or assist with the production by preparing costumes, sets, props or other stage management duties. The entire cast of camp will perform the closing number  –  “Tomorrow” from Annie. Get your Kleenex ready!

Each cast of Big Buddies is in charge of planning and leading one day’s activities. These include ice breaker games, choice of snack foods, devotional lesson (emphasizing values/virtues presented in the songs or musical), group singing, dance/movement to the musical number and crafts.  This year the crafts are typically props or sets that will be used for the Thursday evening performance.  ASB teens have been working together for the past six weeks to prepare a spectacular camp for all involved!

Camp runs from 1:00 -5:00 on Mon & Tue and 1:00-7:30 on Wed and Thurs. Check in/registration starts at 12:00 noon on Monday Aug 3.  Dinner will be served to all campers on both Wed & Thur evenings.  Weather permitting, the cast will have a fun campfire Wednesday night after our “dress rehearsal”.brazil

Parents and family members are invited to watch our entertaining performance. Please plan on arriving by 6:30 pm so the show can start promptly.

Remember – you don’t have to be a professional-level singer or dancer to be a part of camp.  There is something for everybody so join us and make this summer one truly worth remembering!
