Former Big Buddy is Rocking It!

April 23, 2021

Lindsey Brown Kealy served as a Big Buddy for ASB more than 10 years ago working both with the Midtown Buddies program and later directing the Elk Meadow elementary program. Lindsey graduated from OSU Cascades with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Development and Family Sciences and then went on to earn her Masters of Arts in Teaching also from OSU Cascades. Her university work, as well as her experience teaching in public schools, helped her craft a curriculum, PAWSitive Choices, that integrates neuroscience, social and emotional learning, and problem solving into a program that helps children thrive. Lindsey is also the author of the PAWSitive Choices podcast.

PAWsitive Choices is a trauma-informed social and emotional learning curriculum that teaches children to make positive choices, solve problems collaboratively, learn from mistakes, and set goals. This system has the key components to help a classroom run smoothly: visual aids, problem solving, goal setting, data tracking, emotional regulation, and family communication. Teach students all these systems simply by reading Bear’s Amazing Brain, reference the easy-to-use implementation guide for support, and get families on board with the PAWsitive Choices Family Connections. The Home Edition of PAWsitive Choices helps students build and apply the social and emotional learning skills with their families.

We are looking forward to working more closely with Lindsey and putting her curriculum to work in various situations to improve the lives of students and families in Central Oregon. Already PAWSitive Choices has been put to work in 13 classrooms throughout the Bend Lapine School District.

Congratulations, Lindsey, on such a successful start to your company!

Fall 2019 News – Sabbatical??

September 20, 2019

Many are starting to ask – “When does ASB start their school year programs and where will they be held?” The simple answer for now is … we don’t know. With the changes made to the public school hours this fall – teens are no longer out of school earlier than the elementary students. With the hour + difference in release times – it makes it impossible for us to offer elementary programs as we have for the past 17 years. And the middle school students also are released an hour later than in the past so continuing the THRIVE! middle school program is also in question.

However, ASB leaders are meeting together and talking with other community members to determine if we can adjust to still provide leadership development and mentoring opportunities for Big Buddies (teens/college students). For example – offering programs for younger students and teens during school break/holiday weeks is a possibility. Also offering after school teen/college student only sessions (much like we do for camp) is a possibility. Thinking “out of the box” is important now – just as it was when we first started the THRIVE middle school ASB program in 2005.

SO – it’s a “wait, pray and see what God has in store ” time for us. If you have suggestions or ideas how we can serve the girls we have mentored for so many years – feel free to email Char at afterschoolbuddies@gmail.com. Keep checking this site as well as our Facebook and Instagram pages to see if anything new comes about.

We were so blessed to have Katie Campbell on staff as an intern and camp leader this summer. Look at this amazing banner for Team Brazil that she designed and painted for camp. This woman represents ASB in all kinds of ways – shining from the inside out!

Merry Christmas from ASB!

December 16, 2015

ASB girls and leaders have been busy elves this fall preparing gifts to share with others in need in our community.  From crafting chocolate dipped pretzels and goody bags of food for homeless folks and veterans, to sewing fleece baby hats for teen moms, to raising money by making blankets for a Bend High  fundraiser for a beloved teacher battling cancer – the girls of ASB have been sharing love around Bend just as they have been loved by many of you!   We wish all of our supporters and encouragers a very Merry Christmas.  We look forward to meeting more of you as volunteers, financial supporters, prayer warriors or participants in 2016! We need you to help us care for others in the coming year!
